New Bike Lane Along North Shore Dr

Posted by Henry Scott on June 24, 2008

The 0.8 mile stretch of North Shore Dr. between Michigan St. and W Angela Blvd. in South Bend was striped with bicycle lanes last week. There’s room for parking on the NE side so the lane is far out from the curb, but on the SW side there’s no parking so the lane is right up against the curb. Hopefully this will help to promote cycling between downtown and the Riverside Trail!

See below for pictures and a map.

RAGBRAI: The Granddaddy of ‘Em All! July 20-26

Posted by bspitzer on June 23, 2008

If you’re a touring cyclist looking for the best cross-state ride in the country, look no further than our neighbor two states to the left. The Des Moines (Iowa) Register annually sponsors a rolling festival of biking with its ride, R.A.G.B.R.A.I. . . . the Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa. Now in its 36 year, this rolling party of 10,000 cyclists and probably as many supporters attracts folks from all corners of the world.

For the past two years, and with plans to head over again this year, Team Velodox (http://velodox.blogspot.com) represents the South Bend area on this adventure.

Averaging about 70 miles a day, and always riding from West to East, RAGBRAI moves from town to town, stopping to overnight in some of Iowa’s best small-town communities. In 35 years, they’ve begun, passed through or stayed overnight, or ended in over 68% of the towns in Iowa.

Check out their web site, http://www.ragbrai.org.

If you’ve ever had a desire to bike from “sea to shining sea” (or in this case from the Muddy Missouri to the Muddy Mississippi), then RAGBRAI is your ride.

LaPorte County Bikeways Maps

Posted by Henry Scott on June 22, 2008

Nate posted the following on the Bike Michiana discussion board:

LaPorte County has some of the best organized bike routes in northern
Indiana as well as some of the smoothest roads.  Each route is well
marked with color coordinated arrows. A cycling brochure can be
ordered from this link.

http://www.laportecountycvb.com/forms/index.cfm?action=viewform&formID=2

The brochure only took about two weeks to arrive.

I have also made a copy of the brochure for anyone to look at here

Hope to see you out there

New bike shop: The Avenue Bicycle Station

Posted by Adam Bee on June 21, 2008

The only advertising that I’ve seen for this new shop is on Craigslist here, which I’ve copied below.

It’s on the north side of Mishiwaka Ave, just before the exit. Don’t miss the driveway, or it’ll be hard to turn around.

I swung by just as the shop was closing this afternoon. The Station is run out of an old gas station (a nice touch) and looks as though it mostly sells kids bikes. For now the whole stock is used, but the ad mentions new bikes will be sold soon.

Used bicycles for sale.

48-year-old man shot while fighting off teenage bike thieves

Posted by Adam Bee on June 21, 2008

The South Bend Tribune has the story here, with photo (may be blocked after a week or so).

The gist of the story is that the man was sitting along the East Race when a 14-year-old and a 17-year-old tried to steal his bike.  While they struggled over it, the 17-year-old pulled the gun and supposedly shot the man in the wrist.  The teens then ran off.  They were later arrested and identified.

The man had a blue mountain bike, and the kids left behind their green BMX bike.  No word on whether the BMX bike had been also stolen.

My personal take is that this will be an unfortunate downside as bikes gain popularity.  Many cyclists already carry pepper spray, and I think I should probably add it to my usual ride kit, right along with a pump and a spare tube.  Be safe out there!

NIMBA Potato Creek Bike Day: July 12

Posted by Adam Bee on June 19, 2008

The Northern Indiana Mountain Bike Association (NIMBA) is hosting a Bike Day on July 12 at Potato Creek State Park.  It includes a safety class, men’s and women’s mountain bike clinics, a mountain bike time trial, and a kid’s race.  This is the first NIMBA event to be sanctioned by the DNR.  More details are available at the NIMBA site.

Personally, I think this sounds like a ton of fun.  I’ve been thinking for a while about adding a mountain bike to the stable, and this seals the deal for me!

Weekly Group Rides

Posted by Henry Scott on June 19, 2008

Know of a regular group or club ride in the area? Please add a comment with details, and I’ll keep editing the main part of this post with the latest information.

Outpost Tuesday Night Rides: Outpost Sports organizes a group ride every Tuesday night starting in Granger. They have groupings for distance and pace that will suit just about all riders, and they do their best to not drop any rider. From the Outpost website you can subscribe to a mailing list with the latest details. They also had a website dedicated to the group rides last year; I’m not sure if this is still current because it states 2007 on the main page: Ride with Outpost.

Spin Zone Wednesday Night Ride: The Spin Zone ride starts at 6:30 PM at the Spin Zone shop on Bittersweet Rd. in Granger. As Adam pointed on in the comments below, it is a good idea to call the shop ahead of time to confirm that the ride is on (574-243-4994). Here’s a direct link to their page on weekly and special rides: LINK.

Proform Thursday Night Rides: This group leaves from ProForm Bike Shop (Ironwood and Rt 23) each Thursday at 5:30. It’s fairly fast, so if you’re not a racer you may want to plan to drop off with someone else when the pace heats up. Helmets are required.

MBA Weekly Rides: The Michiana Bicycle Association organizes regular rides each week (currently Tuesdays, Wednesdays and weekends!); you can get the latest information here.

Pumpkinvine Bike Ride on Saturday: June 21

Posted by Henry Scott on June 17, 2008

The annual Pumpkinvine Bike Ride is coming up in just a few days. My wife and I participated in this a couple of years ago and it was wonderful — excellent SAG stops! There are 15, 22, 42, 64 and-102 Mile-Routes starting in Goshen (actually, the 15-mile ride starts in Shipshewana).

Notably, this ride is associated with efforts to continue the process of connecting Goshen, Middlebury and Shipshewana by a bicycle trail.

Read more about the ride and development of the trail at the following URL: http://www.pumpkinvine.org/html/2008_bike_ride.html
