Posted by Paul Taylor on October 10, 2008
I received an e-mail from the Bicycle Advocacy Director of a large bike shop in Indy with the news. Pretty exciting for a city of that size, and they are really celebrating. You can read her e-mail here: Read the rest of this entry »

Bicycling and the Law
Posted by Phil G-E on October 9, 2008
I just came across this resource, Bicycling & the Law: Your Rights as a Cyclist, and thought it might be of help in local causes. It was written by a former bike pro who is now a lawyer. From the website:
Bob Mionske makes the law both entertaining and understandable to the non-lawyer, while presenting an accurate and thorough explanation of the laws governing bicycles and the activity of bicycling.Bicycling and the Law will be a definitive resource answering legal questions and the only book of its kind on the market.

Memorials
Posted by Phil G-E on October 9, 2008
I just ran across this article on memorials for bicycle accidents, though I’d read about Ghost Bikes before. I thought it might be time for such a thing in our region.

Senate Bailout Bill Has Tasty Line Item
Posted by Adam Bee on October 6, 2008
I know, it’s depressing that the Senate plays special-interest politics with something so hugely important. But at least this time we’re the special-interest! Thank goodness for Portland!

Update on Twyckenham Ave Bicycle Lane Striping
Posted by Henry Scott on October 6, 2008
The following information was provided this morning by South Bend City Planner Chris Dressel, with permission to post on this site:
The City of South Bend is upgrading portions of the Twyckenham Avenue bicycle route from the current “Share the Road” designation to striped bicycle lanes (one northbound and one southbound), each 5 feet in width. The upgrade will be completed in October (weather permitting). Bicycle lanes may be interrupted near signalized intersections to accommodate vehicle turn lanes. Lanes will be striped as follows:

Bike Lanes
Posted by Paul Taylor on October 5, 2008
On the Opinion page of the Sunday, October 5th South Bend Tribune, there was a letter from a lady seeking guidance on how to deal with bicyclists in bike lanes. She also offered the opinion that, since there was apparently no good way for a motorist to deal with these cyclists, bikes should stay on the sidewalk. This letter was not in the on-line edition of the newspaper. I am inviting all readers of BikeMichiana to read the article, and respond with a letter to the editor. You can write to the editor at VOP@sbtinfo.com: list your full name, address and phone number, as they will call you to verify you are for real. Read the rest of this entry »

Ready for winter?
Posted by Phil G-E on October 10, 2008
I’m thinking about winter. Really thinking about winter. Soon, our environment will seem stripped down, cold, and practically lifeless. However, we all know that there is much more going during winter than appears. Some of us will participate in winter life by wrapping up and biking on through the cold days and nights, meeting winter as a challenge to move through, not sleep through. Others of us may shake our heads and wonder, “Just what is it with those folks?” If you’re still shaking your head, ignore the rest of this post. If you’re intrigued, read on.
