Notre Dame’s “Safetytown Criterium”: Sunday in Rum Village

Posted by Henry Scott on March 21, 2009

This is a followup to Adam’s previous post about the Notre Dame race weekend (this weekend!). As he mentioned, Sunday’s criterium at Rum Village will be conducive for spectators: the loop is only 0.9 miles, so from any spot you’ll see the riders fly past many times.

Wrong-Way Cyclist Hits Car

Posted by Henry Scott on March 21, 2009

Today’s Tribune includes a brief article about a cyclist who ran into a car after running a four-way stop sign while riding against traffic. At the time of this posting, there’s only one comment in response on the Tribune’s website, which wonders why the cyclist wasn’t ticketed [the Tribune article doesn't say either way]. The author of the comment argues that if motorists are required to share they road with cyclists, then cyclists should be subject to ticketing when they violate traffic laws. I agree!

Historical Perspective and the future

Posted by Phil G-E on March 14, 2009

I wonder what stories you might hear if you asked your elders about their memories of bicycles and bicycling.

As I was talking with my mother yesterday, we explored some of her memories of pre-WW II Tokyo. She came from a well-to-do Japanese family and offered some interesting perspectives on cars, bicycles, and pedestrian traffic. She remembered how the streets of Tokyo were narrow and often choked with pedestrians, bicycles and, sometimes, cars. Read the rest of this entry »

They’re Off!

Posted by Henry Scott on March 13, 2009

Although I haven’t seen a robin and Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, I let sun-induced optimism move me to remove my studded tires this morning. I can no longer stand the energy-sapping buzz of carbide studs on bare pavement. I’ll wait for it to warm up a bit more before doing my annual spring tune up, but for now I’m happy to be back to my regular tires. Here’s hoping that winter is really over!

South Bend Mayor Endorses SB553 ‘Bicycles and Traffic Safety’

Posted by Paul Taylor on March 10, 2009

Mayor Luecke has urged Indiana Legislators in Michiana to support the bill that is winding its way through the General Assembly. He has also urged lawmakers to reinstate the 3-foot passing rule, a provision of the original bill that was deleted in the final version by the Senate. Following is the text of Mayor Luecke’s letter: Read the rest of this entry »

A Modest Proposal – Bikers, Take the High Road (NYT article)

Posted by Phil G-E on March 8, 2009

Please take a few minutes to read this very well written article in the New York Times by a bicyclist in New York City. It addresses all the challenges of commuting in a major city. The article by Robert Sullivan seems to be titled either “The Wild Bunch” or “A Modest Proposal – Bikers, Take the High Road.”

Notre Dame Race Weekend: March 21-22

Posted by Adam Bee on March 2, 2009

The Notre Dame Cycling Team is hosting its first-ever weekend of collegiate racing on March 21st and 22nd.  Scholar-athletes from across the Midwest Collegiate Cycling Conference will fly around the roads south of Buchanan on Saturday and Rum Village Park on Sunday for glory and points toward a conference championship.

Spectators are welcome at both events, but the criterium at Rum Village (March 22) is the more spectator friendly of the two, as the peloton flies by every two minutes or so.

We still need a few more volunteers; if you’re interested you can sign up here.  Email me at cbee (at) nd.edu if you have any questions or would like to sign up for a half- or quarter-shift.

Preliminary race flyers can be viewed here.  Mark the weekend for a thrilling spectacle of speed and power!
