SB553: Dead for this Year
Posted by Henry Scott on May 1, 2009
I’m sorry to report that SB553, “Bicycles and Traffic Safety,” will not progress further during this legislative session. I received this news through the Indiana Bicycle Coalition’s Bicycle eNews (click here to subscribe). From what I understand, a dissent was filed in the Senate based on modifications made in the House and, unfortunately, it was not read for reconciliation.
Despite this setback, it is important to realize that the progress the bill did make is actually quite remarkable. As stated by Nancy Tibbett, the IBC President, in the eNews: “I am thrilled with the progress that was made with this bill. Most bills do not make it out of committee, let alone have a vote in both the Senate and the House of Representatives.”
It may take some time, but the folks working on this are so dedicated that I have no doubt they will ultimately be successful. Thanks for your hard work everyone!

Not bad for a first go!
I wonder who filed the dissent, or why it didn’t get read for reconciliation. Oh well. Next year!

Too bad. I will say I was surprised it went as far as it did. With the economy in the tank and all local goverments scrambling to replace property tax money. I thought it would be pigeon holed from the start.

Thanks again to all who did so much work to get this as far as it did.
