School Bike Safety Program Begins

Posted by Jeff Nixa on May 14, 2009

On Monday, May 11th members of the Bike Michiana Coalition, Michiana Bike Association and a South Bend police officer gathered at Warren Primary School in a gymnasium full of curious third-graders to co-host the first area school bike safety program.

School principal Carla Killelea welcomed organizer Judy Lee and friends to an hour-long session with all 81 third-grade students at the school.   As they sat cross-legged in a large circle on the gym floor, students heard from South Bend bicycle patrol police officer Cpl. Aaron Cassel, who with his fully loaded police bike demonstrated proper bike safety and gear and answered nonstop questions from a rapt audience.   Students were urged to wear bike helmets at all times, obey all traffic laws and only ride bikes properly fit and tuned for safety.

In return, every student left with a custom-fitted new bike helment, thanks to joint funding from Michiana Bike Association and Bicycle Indiana.   Students also learned to wear bright noticeable clothing, learned basic hand signals, proper with-traffic lane riding and not to ride after dark without proper lighting and reflective gear.

Lee, Vice President of the Bike Michiana Coalition and a board member of the Michiana Bike Association, initiated the event as a pilot project for what is hoped to become a district wide school bike safety program in the upcoming school year for all third graders in the South Bend area.

Third graders were chosen as the best level of education for several reasons: children of this age are beginning to ride bikes away from the home and driveway, actually getting out onto streets; third graders are curious and interested in bikes;  and they are still ‘teachable’ and intrigued by e.g. police officers/gear.   Lee and the others will be seeking funding support for next years’ broader school safety program.

Passed: Underpass Project Approved

Posted by Phil G-E on May 6, 2009

Many, many thanks to everyone who showed up and spoke in support of the Maple City Greenway trail underpass at Plymouth Rd in Goshen. A close call, the Council was split evenly 3 for and 3 against (1 supporting member absent) until Mayor Kauffman voted for the proposal. Read more about it at in this eTruth article. Many thanks, too, to all who helped organize the response by spreading the word and communicating with their city council members. This will be an excellent addition to the path and make it all the more accessible and useful to pedestrian and bicycle traffic.

See below for a Google Map of the trail:

NIMBA Members Toil in the Woods for Better Trails

Posted by Jeff Nixa on May 5, 2009

While some of you were relaxing on long, smooth, well-hydrated road rides last weekend, members of the Northern Indiana Mountain Bike Association (NIMBA) spent the weekend in blue jeans and sweaty shirts hacking away at massive vines, downed trees, brush and brambles through the woods at Potato Creek State Park during their annual trail cleanup day.  In two days of work during the Friday-Sunday overnight camping event, a handful of NIMBA members completed 3 major trail “re-routes” around problem trail areas and built a 53 foot wooden boardwalk over a swampy area.  All this after similar work recently at Lawless Park and Rum Village.

Action Needed: Maple City Greenway Underpass Project at Risk

Posted by Phil G-E on May 2, 2009

If you use Goshen’s Maple City Greenway, the bike/pedestrian trail along the Mill Race, please take note: according to the Elkhart Truth and a variety of local sources. This issue will be decided this coming Tuesday, May 5th, at 7:00 p.m. at 111 E. Jefferson in Goshen. It boils down to budget concerns and others throwing out the “safety” concerns of a tunnel. I believe the safety concerns of bicyclist/pedestrian injury or death are far more realistic, given what I’ve been told about the well-designed project. Please see details here: Goshen City Council puts brakes on pedestrian underpass.   See more below the separator.

Let’s make a good showing of support and continue this long awaited project.

SB553: Dead for this Year

Posted by Henry Scott on May 1, 2009

I’m sorry to report that SB553, “Bicycles and Traffic Safety,” will not progress further during this legislative session. I received this news through the Indiana Bicycle Coalition’s Bicycle eNews (click here to subscribe). From what I understand, a dissent was filed in the Senate based on modifications made in the House and, unfortunately, it was not read for reconciliation.

Despite this setback, it is important to realize that the progress the bill did make is actually quite remarkable. As stated by Nancy Tibbett, the IBC President, in the eNews: “I am thrilled with the progress that was made with this bill. Most bills do not make it out of committee, let alone have a vote in both the Senate and the House of Representatives.”

It may take some time, but the folks working on this are so dedicated that I have no doubt they will ultimately be successful. Thanks for your hard work everyone!
