South Bend Bike Theft on the Rise

Posted by Henry Scott on June 8, 2009

Today’s Tribune contained an article about a rising incidence of local bicycle theft according to the South Bend Police Department.

I used to say, largely in jest, that one of the few perks of living in an area without a prevalent biking community is that bicycle theft isn’t a huge concern. But, there’s some truth to this: I frequently lock my most valuable bikes with nothing more than a $15 cable lock, whereas when I’ve lived in bicycle hotspots I wouldn’t even turn my back without securing them with a high-end U-lock.

Perhaps one negative consequence of more bikes in Michiana will mean more theft? I’m willing to take that risk, but seriously everyone– be careful with your bikes!

Walking and biking enthusiasts gathered under sunny skies, alongside  a freshly planted field to celebrate an additional 3.4 miles of rail-trail. Some of the new trail is in open field, and part in tunnels of trees. The Friends of  The Pumpkinvine and officials in Goshen are to be congratulated on  the opening of this new path.

Posted by Henry Scott on June 4, 2009

After some tough weather earlier this week, today’s pancake breakfast at LaSalle Grill was well attended and a major crowd-pleaser! The turnout was excellent and the blueberry pancakes, sausage and coffee (provided by the LaSalle Grill) were awesome. The images shown below are from photographer Robert Shellhamer; visit his website to see many more. The center picture is of LaSalle Grill proprietor Mark McDonnell, IBC President Nancy Tibbett and Co-Bike to Work Week Chairman J.V. Peacock. Thanks to the Bike to Work team for a wonderful incentive to bike this morning!
