3rd Annual Bike Michiana for Hospice: Sunday, 9/11/2011

Bike Michiana for Hospice will be held Sunday, September 11th at St. Patrick’s County Park, South Bend, IN. Participants can register online at bikemichianaforhospice.org. The cost for riders who register before August 31 is $30; beginning September 1, the registration fee is $40. Riders 12 and under ride free.

The ride features scenic routes through country roads, live entertainment at each support and guidance (SAG) stop as well as a post-ride party at St. Patrick’s County Park with pulled pork, live music and a beer tent.

Courses include a 3.5 to 11.5 mile family ride (riders can choose the distance) as well as longer rides from 25 miles to 200 K (124 miles). Helmets are required for all riders. SAG stops will feature some of the area’s leading restaurants including Fiddler’s Hearth, LaSalle Grill, Indulgence Pastry Shop & Cafe, Yesterday’s and Grande Mere Inn.

Registration proceeds benefit The Hospice Foundation and Bike Michiana Coalition. Riders may also use an online donation form to raise funds for The Hospice Foundation. One hundred percent of those funds will go to support the Center for Hospice Care’s mission to provide quality, compassionate care for anyone in need of hospice or palliative care services, regardless of their ability to pay.

YWCA Bike Ride for Women: Sunday, 8/21

The 2011 YWCA run, jane, run Bike for Women is scheduled for Sunday, August 21st. There will be two rides, one twenty and the other forty miles. All rides start at St. Patrick’s County Park between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m.

Amazing Bike Event in Downtown Goshen

On the First Friday of every month – throughout the year – businesses, artists, and entertainers throw a party in downtown Goshen. On May 6, Goshen’s First Fridays event will be all about bikes with several special events. Organizers encourage event-goers to “bike to First Fridays”.

The first annual I ♥ Goshen Bicycle Criterium: There will be three races for riders of various skill levels.
Bicycle Safety & Info booth: Learn helpful hints about bicycle safety: from how to properly fit a helmet to pumping up tires. Free bicycle registration available. They will also have information on the endless bicycle trails in Elkhart County.
Bike Decorating Contest: Participants will, deck out their bikes, Pedal, and Participate!
A Family Bicycle Parade will follow the decorating contest.
Girl Scouts Pedal Car Derby: Human powered and eco-friendly transportation for the little tykes.

On May 6, the emphasis is on bicycling because May is National Bike Month, and May 16-20 is National Bike to Work Week.

Bike the Drive (Chicago): Sun., 5/29

The year in review – good things cycling in 2010

This is the time of year to reflect on accomplishments for the year just ended. Here is a short summary of Michiana good things cycling.

Bike to Work Week saw miles ridden in The Corporate Challenge increase to 26,154 from 16,179 (an increase of 74%). Also the number of teams increased to 119 from 111 (an increase of 7%) and South Bend closed off a street so the Bike Michiana Coalition could host an organic blueberry pancake breakfast.

Bike Michiana for Hospice saw the number of riders increase to 475 from 273 (an increase of 102%). Increases are expected again in 2011 since several new features will be added, including a 200 mile route.

Legislation was a mixed bag. A bill to help protect cyclists was introduced in the Indiana Senate. This was a step in the right direction, even though it never got out of committee.

The Indiana-Michigan River Valley Trail saw progress in two areas: Niles opened a new section this fall and South Bend neared final plans on another section to be built in 2011.

South Bend received the Bronze Bicycle Friendly Community award, and activities to get to the Silver level are already underway

Additional routes have been added to the South Bend Bicycle Network. At the end of the year, there were 46 miles of bike routes, including 16 miles of painted bike lanes and 12 miles of separated bike/ped trail. South Bend formed a South Bend Bike Committee, headed by Chris Dressel. The first meeting, made up of several civic, business and government groups, was November 17. This committee, which was one of the recommendations to advance the BFC silver level, plans to meet quarterly

A new Bicycle Signage Committee has been meeting. It is part of a larger effort by South Bend called “Powering the New Economy”. Bicyclists are involved with the signage portion of the project.

The number of Safety Education classes grew. In 2009 there were was one class with 83 students, while in 2010 there were five classes with 338 students. Classes are for elementary students.

Granger Paths took great strides forward, encouraged by their $571,200 federal grant. They received a grant for $146,000 of Safe Routes to School funding and received $26,000 from the Harris Township Board. For more details see the Granger Paths web site.

The Pumpkinvine Trail continued to sprout. Ground was broken for a six mile stretch between Shipshewana and Middlebury. Also wooden fencing was installed by volunteers, along with new plantings of native grasses.For more details see The Pumpkinvine web site.

NIMBA continued to be a leader in mountain biking, holding six successful mountain bike time trails. All this while they continued to develop and maintain area mountain biking trails and hosted a successful bike swap meet.

Bike the Bend was a huge success, registering 1,600 riders who ventured forth on city streets and county roads closed to motorized traffic. The best thing about this event was that it got so many casual riders out on city streets.

2nd Annual Bike Michiana for Hospice Ride: Sun. 9/12

The 2nd annual Bike Michiana for Hospice ride will take place on Sunday, September 12th. I’ll paste a few details below, but check out the event’s official page for registration and the latest information.

2011 Bike to Work and Bike The Bend dates announced

The 2011 dates for these two popular Michiana events have been announced. Bike the Bend will be Sunday, May 15, 2011. Once again, it will be the kickoff for Michiana Bike to Work Week, which will run from Monday, May 16 through Friday. May 20.

These dates are changed from 2010, and once again puts the Michiana Bike to Work celebration in sync with the national event.

Lions Pride Ride: Saturday, June 26

The Lakeville Lions Club will be sponsoring their 3rd annual Lions Pride Ride on Saturday, June 26. The ride will start at the Jackson Street Park in Lakeville, IN and will offer rides of 10, 25, 62 and 100 miles. Registration is from 7:00 -11:00 a.m., and the ride ends at 4:00 p.m. The cost is $15 for adults, $10 for children and $13 each for groups of 5 or more adults.
