Bill Moor wrote an article for yesterday’s Tribune about two Bethel College juniors who successfully biked all the way to Seattle earlier this summer (LINK). I found this story particularly interesting because neither of them had much cycling experience prior to making the trip: they wanted to go, so they basically just started pedaling!

A Tandem, a Tunnel, and No Vision
Posted by Danny Graber on September 8, 2008
“You will crash into the walls because you can’t see and you will be completely disoriented. You will hit the ground,” noted the first local farmer, sipping on his coffee.
“And when you hit the wall you’ll brush off some of the snakes hanging there, and you will be laying there on the tunnel floor with them,” bemused the second.
The third farmer, not to be outdone, chimed in, “Once you’ve made all that commotion and you’re pulling the snakes off you, the bats hanging on the ceiling will free themselves, too, and will get tangled in your helmets.”

Taking a Folding Bike on Amtrak’s Lake Shore Limited
Posted by Henry Scott on September 5, 2008
I recently wrote about acquiring a folding bike and my experience taking it on Greyhound. As I mentioned in that post, my motivation is to transport myself to and from public transportation stations (e.g., Greyhound and Amtrak) for car-free intercity travel. Here I’ll briefly describe my experience taking it on Amtrak’s Lake Shore Limited line over Labor Day Weekend.

What a Great Day for a Ride! [South Bend to Warren Dunes]
Posted by Henry Scott on August 3, 2008
Yesterday (Saturday, August 2nd) was a perfect day for biking: warm, low humidity and an absolutely beautiful sky — just enough billowy clouds to add some personality to an otherwise deep blue expanse.

355 Bikers Show for Patrick Sawyer Memorial Ride
Posted by Jeff Nixa on July 30, 2008
According to an Outpost employee at Tuesday evening’s Pat Sawyer Memorial Ride, 355 bicyclists were present and counted as they left the parking lot of Northpointe School in Granger. The Ride, organized by Matt Mooney and JV Peacock, was designated as a fundraiser for the Sawyer family. J.V. said “Our goal is to raise $10,000 for Patrick’s family.” A large number of donations were received at the event itself, including one cyclist who donated $400, “one hundred for each of Patrick’s children.”
Patrick’s wife Nancy, her children and several other family members were present at the start of the ride, and Nancy was visibly moved by the spectacle of so many riders, of all ages, including families with children who participated in a 4-mile family ride prior to the regular longer rides. “I can’t believe all this support,” said Nancy, just one day after Patrick’s funeral. “I don’t even know these people! I know I will have my bad days, but right now I feel a real lightness and energy from people like these.”

Outpost Trek Demo Day Escapes Rain, Mostly
Posted by Adam Bee on July 11, 2008
The Outpost Trek Demo Day in Granger on Tuesday night went off without a hitch. Riders showed up early at 5pm to claim a brand new Madone 5.2 off a rack of about twenty to use for the evening’s usual ride. Some demo cyclists were regulars to the Outpost ride, while some were new to the ride and the sport. The rain generally held off, though some roads were wet enough to give rouleurs a good taste of what I call “Michigan toothpaste”. Nobody crashed their pricey steeds, either.
I was one of the lucky folks to score a Madone. Although I had the mechanics raise the seat twice, it still was substantially lower than I like. I could never quite get comfortable on the bike due to its odd fit, but I did notice that it was twitchier and perhaps slightly stiffer than my BMC Team Machine. It was a bit bumpier of a ride–sometimes I’d worry that I’d flatted–but in general the roads on the ride are very smooth anyway.
I’m looking forward to trying out another one next year, and I’ll be sure to bring a tape measure to better approximate my current setup!

Sights and scenery of St. Joseph County
Posted by Nate Barnett on July 3, 2008
With summer in full swing I am constantly reminded why bicycling is the best way to enjoy the sights and scenery of St. Joseph County. On a ride last week I snapped a few pics of the eye-catching things that I encounter on my commutes to work.
I have always loved the look of rolled hay.
This is something you don’t see all of the time but here they are a few camels about a half mile west of 23 on New road.
